Destiny3D -- AlphaDog
It has been a while since a news update. Things really haven't changed much in a while. But something new has happened. Since the opening of Destiny3D.com I have spent a lot of time in the forums keeping up with the development of the Destiny3d engine. Things seem to be progressing very well and we should see some early beta releases in the beginning of 2002 with a full release by the fall. The Gameweave project has gone on for quite a long time as it's main purpose was to learn gave development as well as all the supporting technologies, so I am not worried about it taking longer if it means learning more. It was decided by CCI that they would be dropping the Genesis/Jet code completely and using their own code. The are plaing to support the Genesis/Jet interface, so porting should be very easy. The old code was bringing the project down as well as keeping ties open with WildTangent that were just too difficult and really provided no value. I was also decided that the engine would not be open source, but would instead require membership to the Destiny3d site. I think this is a great idea and membership fees are very low; the cost of one computer book. This will allow the engine to be focused and move in the direction it needs to go. They expect an initial release in January and a full blown 1.0 release mid 2002. |

Fun with Perl -- AlphaDog
I took some time to cleanup some more of the site.. Gotta get those depricated tags outta here.. Gotta be 4.0 compliant. I also took some time to implement some features that I wanted in the site originally but never had time to implement. The beginnings of the message center has been started. All it really does right now is show you the time you last visited the site. Just trying to get my feet wet with using cookies. I also finally got the search scripts in place, which also uses client side cookies. There really aren't that many pages yet, but in the future if I end up publishing the shell documentation this could really be useful. Anyway.. give the search a try and let me know if there are any problems. I implemented some better page management scripts so that I can change the 'cool stuff' and 'cool links' right hand nav more frequently. Most of this stuff is just me experimenting with website management scripts that I may use on other sites I design... Anyway.. Have fun.. |

Jet3D?? -- AlphaDog
Well I know it might seem like I'm playing musical game engines again but my development with GameDriver is not going that well. Wild Tangent seems very reluctant to support or document the kernel functions of their API. They want to spend more time and resources on web based tools. This is fine but does nothing to help my development, and paints a very bleak picture for the future of GameDriver. I will probably spend more time trying to figure out how the damn thing works than actually using it. While I have been porting everything to GameDriver, a very cool thing has been going on in the Jet3D world.
A company named CCI has taken over management of the project and seems very dedicated to its continued development. Here is a direct quote from their press release:
"CCI will be providing for the continued "care and feeding" of Genesis3D 1.0, Jet3D and their respective Internet communities. It is our wish that these communities and engines continue to prosper and grow. To this end, I am dedicating CCI financial and development resources to insure that the communities are maintained and official releases of the engines continue to be made available to all. This includes dedicating CCI development resources towards the completion of Jet3D 1.0 and upkeep of Genesis3D 1.0."
They seem very committed to managing the project with very rigid guidelines. This is very good news since the project, before, just got out of hand from a management perspective. The original charter of the Jet3D council was to lock down the code, fix the bugs, architect and document the engine, outline a path for future growth, and limit changes and additions to the code base to a governing body whos reponsibility was to maintain the growth and stability of the engine. CCI seems to have the resources and buy-in to actually make this happen. I am very excited to hear this and plan to dust off my old Jet3D code and continue on the path I was on before interest in the community caused Jet3D to wither. It may be some time before I make any serious headway as CCI has a lot of work on there hands to become familiar with the engine and move it into a steady state that can be used by the development community.
Here are some quotes from the Jet3D forum from CCI:
"We will be making Jet a collection of high-level objects that can easily be swapped out and replaced with more advanced objects over time. Also we want to have plugable object abilities for easy extention of functionality. We need to take our time on this so that it will be a lasting architecture, not something that needs to be completely replaced right away. I don't want another throwaway engine. There's enough of those already."
"I see Jet 1.0 as being competitive with the recent Unreal tech demo or Halo. That's where we will be heading it. That technology is geared towards what will be commonplace, low-end hardware 2 years from now. Jet will have to be ready enough to use so that possible games using it can be delivered within that timeframe given a reasonable development time."
"As always Jet is opensource. Anyone is free to do anything they want with it. This is what CCI will be doing. Others may want to do something else. That's the beauty of opensource."
I guess we'll just wait and see what happens.. Thanks for tuning in.. |

binaryRevelations -- AlphaDog
Well folks, sorry for the delay.. But we are back in business. I'm not sure what happened to NetweaverInteractive.com, but it just vanished. Luckily I backed it up a week before it went bye-bye. Kind of a blessing in disguise. I decided to register my own domain and get some decent hosting. After hours of thinking and searching I finally came up with a domain name that was both available and adequately describes (at least mostly) what I want the site to be about. At 2:00AM last night I finally setteled on:
Every thing I do will now be under the name
binaryRevelations Interactive LLC.
I plan to take the domain name everywhere I go, it is currently parked at hostway.com. The domain name will probably take about 72hrs to propagate so if you want to visit the site you will have to use the IP:
Hostway.com is pretty cool, and now I have 200mb of space and 6gb of transfer to play with, as well as 15 mail boxes, CGI, shell account, mSQL and lots of other fun stuff. I will probably be moving my personal homepage here soon as well. I plan to make a sub-site for every project... Kind of like a personal project portal.
I need to make some development diary entries soon because a bit has happened since the old site went down...
Stop by and have a look.. And don't forget to leave a house warming gift. ;-)

Proud Father -- AlphaDog
I have updated the screens page with a ton of new screen shots... I guess I was really happy about getting the new bitmap functions to work and porting the HUD code to work with GameDriver. I put up about (8) new shots... I also uploaded a new log file generated by the shell if any body is interested, looks a lot like the old log with just a few changes, gotta get some sleep. Check out the new eye candy. ;-) |

Re-Birth of GameWeave -- AlphaDog
Well guys... I've got some bad news... It looks like Jet3D is going to die. It happened for a lot of reasons, mostly lack of support an organization. I was asked to join the Jet3D council to help keep the project alive. Over the past week we have tried to get Jet3D back on it's feet. I even went so far as to redesign the Jet3d.com website and move it to a new host, check it out here: http://www.netweaverinteractive.com/jet3d It is actually still a bit up in the air, one of the council members is still interested in hosting the site on: http://jet3d.gamedev.net My gut feeling tells me that this will probably not happen. So the next question is, what is going to happen to GameWeave. Well I have started the porting process to WildTangent's GameDriver. They have the same code base as Jet3D since the technology was originally acquired from Eclipse Entertainment, who owns Jet3D. Although the engine differs in many respects, it is close enough to allow me to port GameWeave to the GameDriver. It took me one evening to port 90% of the code to use the GameDriver API. This does not mean that it will run right away, but it does give me hope that with only a little bit more work, I can switch to a new rendering system. Well that's it for now... Wish me luck... |

Run-time dump -- AlphaDog
I have uploaded a Run-time log of a GameWeave session just as
an example of the kind of things that go on when the shell
initializes and shuts down. I decided to output my run-time
log as HTML because I was getting blury-eyed trying to find
items in the log... Anyway, here it is..

Just boxes -- Alphadog
I spent some time testing the art-path from TrueSpace into the game environment, a couple of BSODs later and I have two new models, one is a medkit and the other is the box from HellRaiser (which actually spins). I have to go back and re-work the conversion tool a bit because it is crashing every now and then; but it works. Now... I just can't wait for TrueSpace 3.1 to get here. |

New HUD code in place... Eye candy available -- Alphadog
Since I was just so damn happy to get the new HUD class working
I just had to get some graphics in there, even if they are way
cheesy... I put up two new shots on the screens page, they show
a green alpha blended crosshair, and some of the particle
effects to implement fire (which looks pretty good fully animated).
I have not had time to try some really cool graphics for the HUD,
but they will come. For all you designers out there, the crosshair
is just a 24bit windows BMP and I used Photohop; and created a
black layer and then used the type tool and just made a '+' sign..
Took like 3 minutes to do... Anyway that's it for now... |

I said member.... -- Alphadog
I have finished updating all the Perl scripts that run the site. On the top nav area you will notice a 'Members' link. If you click it you will get a page that will allow you to post news items to the index page, links to the links page, and send email messages to everyone who has registed with the site. These scripts are fresh off my editor so expect some bugs here and there... BTW there isn't any preview functionality yet so if you make a mistake email me so that I can clean up the item... All member functions are password protected, and I will be sending them out soon; so look for em... |
